Since beginning commercial operations on April 30, 2010, Nam Theun 2 has played a key role in Laos’ socio-economic development by supplying clean energy to both Laos and Thailand. The hydropower facility has generated tens of thousands of gigawatt hours of electricity, helping to reduce reliance on fossil fuels.
“This occasion not only marks a significant milestone in our company’s life, but is also a testament to the vision and resilience of the Lao PDR and developers in harnessing the hydroelectric potential of the country,” Mr Rupp said. “What matters most to me is safety – this month, we reached 3,000 days without an accident among staff and contractors.”
The project, located in Khammuan province, is one of the largest hydropower ventures in the country. It is a joint investment by Electricité de France (EDF) with 40 percent, Electricity Generating Public Company Limited of Thailand (EGCO) with 35 percent, and the Lao government through the Lao Holding State Enterprise (LHSE) with 25 percent. Nam Theun 2 holds a 25-year concession (2010-2035).
The Minister of Energy and Mines, Mr Phosay Sayasone, congratulated the company on its achievements and contributions to national development.
“Nam Theun 2 is a model of international cooperation and public-private partnership. It serves as a reference for hydropower development not only in Laos but also in the region,” he said.

Over the past 15 years, Nam Theun 2 has also contributed to local communities through investments in education, healthcare, and infrastructure, while maintaining a strong focus on environmental sustainability.
“This project is not just a technical success, but also a social and environmental one,” Mr Rupp said. “Our 270 employees, 95 percent of whom are Lao, are the true driving force behind our success. Their dedication and hard work have made Nam Theun 2 a model of excellence in the global hydropower sector.”
As the project enters its next phase, stakeholders reaffirmed their commitment to continued collaboration and sustainable development.
