Vice President Bounthong Chitmany gives advice to Khammuan authorities when visiting the province last weekend.

Vice President calls for faster development in Khammuan

Provincial leaders in Khammuan have been urged to accelerate development efforts, tighten up security, and push ahead with Party work in preparation for the upcoming provincial Party Congress.
Vice President Bounthong Chitmany, who is a Politburo member and Standing Member of the Secretariat of the Party Central Committee, gave the advice during a working visit to the province on July 5-6.
His visit aimed to provide guidance on political, socio-economic, and organisational development.
During meetings with the provincial Party Committee, led by its Secretary and provincial Governor Mr Vanxay Fongsavanh, the Vice President was briefed on achievements made during the first half of this year.
These included progress in national defence, security, and economic matters.
The Vice President praised the province’s achievements but stressed the need for greater momentum to meet national and Party targets.
He called for tighter control over border security, stronger action against drug abuse, and heightened vigilance against threats to political stability.
He urged leaders to reinforce grassroots political structures, fulfill resolutions adopted at the past Party Congresses, and to maintain political discipline across all levels.
On economic matters, he called for quicker delivery of public and private investment projects, improved business environment, and increased support for small and medium-sized enterprises that demonstrate strong performance.
He also highlighted the importance of good crop yields, flood prevention and management, prevention of livestock diseases, poverty reduction, and lowering the school dropout rate.
Mr Bounthong and his delegation also inspected the Mekong riverbank protection project near Vat Pha That Sikhottabong in Thakhaek district.
The project, carried out by DM Group Company, began in late April 2025. It stretches for 180 metres along the river and is 45.9 metres wide.
Now 70 percent complete, construction is expected to take 24 months. The work is funded by Khammuan province at a total cost of over 48 billion kip.
