More heavy rain brings further risk of flooding

A depression system moving across Vietnam at 5-10 kilometres per hour will pass over Laos, bringing a renewed risk of flooding and landslides in the next two days, the Meteorology and Hydrology Department has warned.

This means everyone should be prepared for weather extremes and keep track of forecasts.
Heavy rain and strong winds are forecast for Huaphan and Xieng Khuang provinces, where temperatures are predicted to range from 20-28 degrees Celsius.
In the northwest, heavy rain and strong winds are also likely in parts of Luang Namtha, Bokeo, Oudomxay, Luang Prabang and Xayaboury provinces, where temperatures will range from 23-32C.
The central provinces of Vientiane, Borikhamxay and Khammuan can expect similar conditions, with temperatures ranging from 24-31C.
In Xaysomboun province, temperatures will be lower at 20-28C, with thundery showers and occasional strong winds also expected.
In the south there will be heavy rain and strong wind gusts in some areas of Champassak, Xekong and Attapeu provinces, where temperatures will range from 24-31C.
Plateau areas can expect the same conditions, but will have lower temperatures ranging from 17-25C.
More downpours are also forecast for Vientiane, with temperatures ranging from 25-32C.
Members of the public should follow weather forecasts through newspapers, radio and television or visit the Meteorology and Hydrology Department’s Facebook page and prepare for extreme weather if necessary.
Rivers around the country are continuing to rise as the amount of rainfall increases, and some have already overflowed their banks.
The level of the Xechamphone River in Champhone district, Savannakhet province, was measured at 7.5 metres on July 23. This is the warning level for the river, where the danger level is set at 8 metres.
The level of the Xedon River in Sanasomboun district, Champassak province, has reached 9.53 metres, approaching the warning level of 10 metres, while the danger level is 11 metres.
Almost 40 households in Xay district, Oudomxay province, were affected by flooding on July 19 following heavy rainfall over many hours, with the cost of damage estimated at more than 418 million kip, according to Lao National Radio.
A hydropower company operating in Phouvong district, Attapeu province, has held talks with the government on the management of water flow in the rainy season to ensure the safety of local residents.
The authorities will closely monitor drainage systems during the rainy season and carry out inspections of dams, sluice gates and telecommunication stations in an attempt to prevent flooding, according to the Pathetlao Daily newspaper.
