BRT bus drivers begin training ahead of trial run in Vientiane

Drivers who will be employed under Vientiane’s Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system have begun training on the new vehicles at the National Sports Stadium, as the city prepares for a trial run of the landmark bus service at the end of this month.
According to an official in charge, the three-month trial run of the new routes is expected to begin on schedule. Construction of facilities along the route was 81.5 percent complete as of June, with full completion scheduled for December.
Full operation of the new bus service is expected to begin in early 2026.
Meanwhile, construction of additional BRT routes to Wattay International Airport and the Laos-China Railway Station will continue, with completion expected by the end of 2026.
Passengers will be able to pay for travel using a smart card instead of cash.
The first BRT route runs from Chao Anouvong Park to the National University of Laos, via Saphangmeuk, Kaysone Phomvihane, Nongbone, Setthathirath and Souphanouvong roads. It covers a distance of 12.9 kilometres and includes 26 bus stops.
The 55 new electric buses to be deployed each have four doors, 40 seats, and can carry up to 90 passengers, including wheelchair users.
In addition, 150 electric tricycles will provide feeder services, transporting passengers between BRT stations and the city’s main tourist attractions.
