The Capacity Building Programme for Payment System Oversight in Laos (2022-2024), organised by KOICA, was successfully conducted in Vientiane from August 12 to 16, attended by 28 staff from the Bank of the Lao PDR. The training programme brought together participants from the capital and from Savannakhet, Xieng Khuang, Champassak, Luang Prabang and Oudomxay provinces. The main objective of the training was to enhance Laos’ overall payment system. Korea University’s Sejong Research and Business Team visited Laos to deliver specialised lectures to the Lao officials, leveraging their expertise in Korea’s economic system and intellectual property management. During the five days of intensive training, participants learned about the background of the Korean economy and the basic theory of financial management. Lectures on monetary policy and the development of the Korean payment system provided valuable insights for Lao government officials. They explored the Korean bank’s record of overcoming economic problems and found a point of application in the Lao context. In addition to lectures, participants engaged in various activities such as discussion sessions, the use of statistical data, and setting up action plans. Based on the lessons learned from the programme and the detailed feedback given by the Korean experts, participants created a practical action plan for the payment system using Laos’ statistical data. With the initiative of the KOICA Global Fellowship Programme CIAT (Capacity Improvement and Advancement for Tomorrow), the KOICA Office in Laos aims to build the capacity of Lao government officials towards sustainable and inclusive development. | |
