This project is supported with funding from the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs of the Republic of Korea through the state enterprise Korean Rural Community Corporation (KRC).
The Director General of the Department of Irrigation, Dr Khamphachanh Vongsana, said the project will make very important contributions to the development of agriculture and forestry as well as rural development in Laos.
In particular, the project will enhance and upgrade the management and monitoring of water for irrigation. This will help to modernise the irrigation system, create conditions for sustainable agricultural production, and increase the income of farmers.
Under the agreement, the project is expected to provide water to 360 hectares to contribute to the ministry’s food security plan and to produce agricultural products, while also pushing the government’s policy for self-economic development.
Dr Khamphachanh hoped the government of Korea will carry on such cooperation, especially for the flood prevention project and the installation of solar cell water pump systems in Borikhamxay province.
The Laos-Korea Irrigation and Cooperation Development Center, in its second phase, will continue strengthening the unity and cooperative relations between the two nations.
Over the years, cooperation between the Lao PDR and the Republic of Korea in the irrigation sector has been seen to be successful and effective. Korea has signed a memorandum of cooperation to increase cooperation and strengthen the agricultural sector of both countries.
The implementation of various projects has been completed, such as the Rural Irrigation Development project at Tham village in Khoun district of Xieng Khuang province, worth US$4 million, and the Rural Development Project and Agricultural Technical Center at Yaichalearn village in Sangthong distric, Vientiane, worth US$4.02 million.
Another project is being implemented to build a training center for irrigation cooperation between Laos and Korea, which is worth US$4.75 million. The construction of facilities and acquisition of equipment and tools for training has been completed.
The Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry and the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs of Korea have signed an agreement on July 31, 2024, for a grant to establish a management system and to check the stability of agricultural water reservoirs in the Lao PDR. This project is valued at US$4.6 million, and previous grants were worth US$23.02 million.
