Deputy Secretary of the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, Michelle Chan, was in Laos to attend the ASEAN Senior Official Meeting in Luang Prabang and Vientiane. She made the most of her visit to meet with Australian businesses in Luang Prabang, AgCoTech Laos and Lao Buffalo Dairy. AgCoTech produces medicated animal feed blocks. AgCoTech provides their feed blocks free of charge to local people. The blocks increase livestock productivity and welfare and reduce livestock methane emissions. Lao Buffalo Dairy is a social enterprise that rents buffalos from local families to provide them with a regular income stream. The farm produces yogurt, cheese and ice cream for sale in domestic and overseas markets. The two business were supported by Australia’s Business Partnerships Platform program. Michelle was impressed by tangible outcomes of Australia’s economic development program in Laos. She was pleased to see Australian investments in agriculture, which is a priority sector for Laos in the Australia’s Southeast Asia Economic Strategy. --Photo Australia in Laos |
