A Japanese dressmaker serving as a JICA volunteer at the Lao Youth Union in Vientiane has bid farewell to her counterparts following the completion of a two-year assignment in Laos. Ms Miho Kawamura, who was assigned to the Lao People's Revolutionary Youth Union’s Vocational Training Centre, made significant contributions to capacity building. Prior to her departure, the Deputy Director General of the Ministry of Planning and Investment’s Department of International Cooperation, Mr Khouthong Sommala, warmly welcomed a delegation led by JICA Laos Office senior representative, Ms Yuki Yoshimura, in Vientiane on October 24. Expressing her gratitude, Ms Kawamura thanked the Lao government and her counterparts for their support, which contributed to the successful completion of her assignment. She is set to return to Japan on October 30. Ms Kawamura taught students how to use sewing machines and design and sew unlined jackets. She also guided teachers and students in designing and sewing shorts and straight pants, and created production manuals with samples. Currently, some 35 Japan Overseas Cooperation Volunteers, including two senior volunteers, are working in Laos. These volunteers, collaborating closely with their Lao counterparts, are contributing to development efforts in Vientiane and the provinces of Vientiane, Borikhamxay, Savannakhet, Champassak, Saravan, Luang Prabang, Oudomxay and Xieng Khuang. |

Minister of Agriculture and Forestry Dr Linkham Douangsavanh gathers with senior ministry officials, French Ambassador Ms Siv-Leng Chhuor, and the Regional Director of the French Development Agency (AFD) in South-East Asia, Mr Jean-Pierre Marcelli, at the French Embassy Residence on Wednesday to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the AFD in Laos. The event brought together representatives of the Lao government and members of the international community and NGOs, highlighting the growing importance of Franco-Lao cooperation for inclusive and sustainable development. |

Supported by the Embassy of the Russian Federation to Laos and the Russian Scientific and Cultural Centre in Vientiane, a meeting takes place at the National University of Laos (NUOL) between representatives of the Duma of the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation, the rector of NUOL Dr Dexanourath Seneduangdeth, teachers at the Philological Faculty of the Russian Language Department, Director of the Centre for Open Education, and students. Sholban V. Kara-ool, Deputy Chairman of the State Duma of the Russian Federation and Biysultan S. Khamzaev, State Duma Deputy, informed attendees about the state and prospects for the development of Russian-Lao relations. Last week, NUOL held a grand opening ceremony for the Russian language classroom at the Open Education Centre. Russian teachers will not only teach everyone who wants to speak, read and write in Russian, but will also talk about Russia and Russian traditions. |

The Embassy of the Republic of Korea in Laos and the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) Office in Laos host the ‘2024 Korea-Laos Friendship Night’. The event was attended by Mr Jung Yung Soo, Ambassador of the Republic of Korea to Laos; Ms Kim Myung Jin, Country Director of the KOICA Office in Laos; and Mr Khamsouay Keodalavong, President of the Laos-Korea Friendship Association. More than 300 Lao nationals have benefited from scholarships and training programmes provided by the government of the Republic of Korea, gaining postgraduate degrees in various fields. The purpose of the event was to encourage alumni to build networks among themselves and to share their knowledge and experiences with the community. Around 80 alumni, who had studied in Korea and now work for Lao ministries, other government bodies and NGOs, attended the event. Ambassador Jung Yung Soo congratulated Laos on successfully hosting the 2024 ASEAN Summit and expressed the hope that alumni would serve as bridges for future cooperation, highlighting the upgrade of the relationship between Laos and Korea to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.
