Hospitals move towards autonomy under health reform
Champasak Provincial Hospital has begun strengthening leadership and management capacity to support the government’s health reform strategy, which aims to make hospitals more autonomous and sustainable.
The hospital hosted a workshop from October 28-31 to discuss steps towards hospital autonomy, attended by 34 directors, doctors, nurses and administrators from provincial-level hospitals in Khammuan, Savannakhet and Champasak.
The Director of Champasak Provincial Hospital, Dr Khamsing Keothongku, presided over the event, with training led by Senior Specialist in Hospital Management from the Swiss-Laos Hospital Project, Dr Alphons Schnyder.
The workshop aimed to improve the quality of patient care and boost public trust in hospital services, encouraging more people to use government-run facilities.
Participants were encouraged to strategise ways to use existing resources for their maximum benefit and to prepare for the effective implementation of the government’s Health Reform Strategy Phase IV (2025-2030).
Training also focused on ensuring that hospitals develop transparent and sustainable administrative and financial capabilities, allowing them to gradually move towards self-sufficiency.
Topics covered included steps for implementing hospital autonomy, hospital management tools, patient-centred care, leadership, financial and personnel management, project and change management, as well as key driving forces for hospital self-sufficiency.
Participants engaged in interactive discussions on ways to strengthen leadership and management capacity, improve teamwork, and apply management tools in their daily operations.
The training represents an important step towards transforming public hospitals into self-managed institutions under national legislation, promoting transparency, accountability and long-term efficiency in the healthcare system.
