Ministry offers scholarships to flood-affected students

Impoverished students affected by the flooding in Sanamxay district, Attapeu province, will be eligible for scholarships under the education policy for flood victims.
The Ministry of Education and Sports recently said it would provide scholarships for flood victims in Sanamxay district, although the Department of Higher Education does not know how many students require financial support.
Under the policy, students who receive the scholarship will receive an allowance for each month they spend at university, to protect their right to an education.
Students attending each of the country’s universities will receive the same amount. This funding will not be offered to students enrolled at educational institutions run by other ministries.
Director General of the Department of Higher Education, Associate Prof. Dr Saykhong Saynasine, yesterday told Vientiane Times about the plans to help flood victims by providing scholarships for poor students in Sanamxay district.
The department would encourage the students to continue their studies, as the minister had advised.
The ministry had called an urgent meeting between the four universities under the Department of Higher Education to discuss the provision of scholarship for flood-affected students, following the advice of the Minister of Education and Sports.
The four universities are the National University of Laos in Vientiane, Luang Prabang’s Souphanouvong University, Savannakhet University and Champassak University.
The minister would advise the authorities at Champassak University about the plan to help impoverished students as most tertiary level students in Sanamxay district would be enrolled at this university, Associate Prof. Dr Saykhong Saynasine said.
Those eligible to receive the scholarship must have completed their studies at upper secondary schools.
Students who believe they qualify for a scholarship can submit a request to their university, he added.
The number of such applicants at universities around the country has yet to be evaluated. Poverty-stricken students who have not passed an entrance exam may still request a scholarship from their intended university.
