Ministry offers scholarships to flood-affected orphans

About 350 orphans and children who lost their father or mother during the floods in Sanamxay district, Attapeu province will be eligible for scholarships under the education policy for flood victims.

Deputy Minister of Education and Sports, Associate Prof. Dr Khamphay Sisavanh recently spoke to Vientiane Times after a National Disaster Prevention and Control Committee meeting about the assistance being provided to flood victims in Sanamxay district, including help with education for affected children.
He said the ministry would provide scholarships for children who had been orphaned or lost one parent as a result of the flooding and were attending primary schools in Sanamxay district.
“The ministry will provide scholarships to these children to enable them to continue their studies at boarding schools. Initially, it will be in Xekong, Saravan and Champassak provinces and we will also provide them with allowances, according to advice from the National Ad Hoc Committee,” he said. “Under the education policy, outstanding students in future will be able to continue their studies through to vocational schools or public universities,” he added.
In addition, other impoverished students affected by the flooding in Sanamxay district but not eligible to receive the scholarships will still get free educational equipment.
The ministry is sending textbooks and other educational material to the Attapeu provincial education authority to help children in need.
Minister of Labour and Social Welfare, Dr Khampheng Saysompheng told the meeting it was necessary to continue support for flood victims including helping impoverished students in the area.
“Some of the eligible children will receive a scholarship to for education at SOS Children’s Villages under the Ministry of Labour and Social Welfare around the country, according to a request from the Ministry of Education and Sports, and they will be given a monthly spending allowance,” he added.
Sanamxay district has 162 students in lower secondary school, 180 at upper secondary school and 315 primary school pupils. Many of them attend Sanamxay Lower Secondary School, which is currently being used to house more than 1,000 people made homeless by the floods.
About 7,000 people are housed in schools and makeshift accommodation and are struggling to cope with very uncomfortable conditions, according to local officials.
