Pongsaly to develop waterfalls to promote tourism

Phongsaly province plans to develop facilities at Huay Chit, Huay Hoi and Huay Dong waterfalls to attract more domestic and international visitors and to promote tourism, an official has said.
Mr Oukham Toulaphan, an official of the provincial Information, Culture and Tourism Department, told Vientiane Times on Tuesday that officials have inspected the three sites and sent a development plan to authorities for approval.
Authorities will construct infrastructure and facilities such as roads, restaurants, toilets and huts around the waterfalls. The total cost of the development has been estimated at about 2 billion kip authorities are discussing the issue of granting concessions at the sites, he said.
The three waterfalls are completely natural sites as they have never been developed and do not have any facilities, and their approach roads are not in a good condition.
“However, the waterfalls have an abundance of natural beauty and tourists always visit them, especially during the rainy season when they are very beautiful,” Mr Oukham said.
Huay Chit waterfall in May district is located about 30 km from the city, and Huay Hoi and Huay Dong waterfalls are in Bounneua district and located about 2 km from the capital.
Besides the waterfalls, Phongsaly has interesting festivals and adventure activities, including a tea drinking festival and treks to natural attractions and ethnic villages within the forests that take about two days, Mr Oukham said.
Visitors can experience the lifestyle of the ethnic people and a lot of natural beauty during treks. Most  people in Phongsaly belong to a various ethnic groups.
Tourists can also taste the local foods and drinks, such as tea from trees some 400 years old, fresh honey from forests and dried buffalo skin. They can buy souvenirs such as cotton and silk garments and woven baskets.
Phongsaly is located in northern Laos, about 800 km from Vientiane. It is accessible via all-weather roads that allow tourists to experience stunning views, beautiful nature and fresh air. The province can also be accessed by aeroplane.
The province has nine hotels, 62 guesthouses and resorts, 198 restaurants and nine entertainment venues.
More than 200,000 domestic and foreign tourists visited Phongsaly last year, according to statistics from the Ministry of Information, Culture and Tourism.
