Provinces prepare colourful activities to celebrate Lao New Year

Provinces across the country are preparing colourful activities to celebrate the Lao New Year during April 14-16.
Savannkhet province has prepared several activities, which are different from the ones organised in past years, to attract domestic and international visitors, an official said. The official, who asked not to be named, told Vientiane Times on Wednesday, “The province has prepared new activities to celebrate the Lao New Year, including a caravan of cars, motorcycles and bicycles on April 14, in which the vehicles must be vintage cars.
“Savannkhet also will have a parade featuring Miss Lao New Year (Nang Sangkhan) in Kaysone Phomvihane district on the same day. People attending the parade must wear traditional clothes. These activities are different from those of past years.”
Meanwhile Champassak provincial authorities have also improved tourist attractions, services and safety measures to welcome visitors, an official of the provincial Information, Culture and Tourism Department, Ms Mala Chanthalam, said.
The Head of the Khammuan provincial Information, Culture and Tourism Department, Mr Khanti  Phothin, said, “Khammuan will hold a Baci ceremony on April 15 in Thakhaek district to bless provincial leaders. The leaders and participants will gather in Nabo temple in Thakhaek to make sand stupas or ‘Topphathatsay’ for good luck.” Luang Prabang province too will also organise many activities to celebrate Lao New Year and promote Visit Lao Year 2018.
According to an official in Luang Prabang, the activities include the” Lolat” market fair, which will be held on the main street between the old stadium and the National Museum (Royal Palace) on April 14. The fair will showcase traditional textiles and products from Laos and nearby countries. There will also be a dragon fire rocket display and sightseeing at Xiengman village in Chomphet district.
On April 15, there will be a textile exhibition by ethnic groups and a Baci ceremony for leaders and overseas and local guests, while there will be an almsgiving ceremony and the Miss Lao New Year procession on April 16.
According to the 2017 tourism statistics report of the Tourism Development Department, the Ministry of Information, Culture and Tourism, Laos attracted more than 3.8 million visitors last year. More than 655,400 visitors visited Luang Prabang province in 2017, an increase of 1.85 percent compared to 2016. The province aims to attract more than 730,000 visitors this year, according to the local Information, Culture and Tourism Department.
