Park creates income for poor villages in Sichuan

Sichuan province, China :Yonghe Modern Agriculture Park in Fujiang district covers 55 administrative villages including 11 poor villages of Yongxing, Hesha and Renlibut poverty is now declining.

Zit ong village is another of these 11 poor villages but thanks to the park,people's living standards are on the improve. Last week, Asian journalists met with the head of Zitong village to hear about poverty reduction efforts.

A village located amongstYonghe Modern Agriculture Park in Fujiang district, Sichuan province.

Zitong village head Mr Jiang Yong, said that two years ago there were 73 poor households, but only five last year.This is because the park is attracti ng more and more visitors from home and abroad.

“Previously, workers needed to find work in bigger towns, but now they work in the village with their parents; some are food and beverage sellers and some rent out their houses to improve their income,” he pointed out.

By the end of 2016, per capita net income of farmers in the park had exceeded 15,000 yuan (over 18 million kip). There were six poor villages, with 2,802 households and 5,866 people having been lifted out of poverty. Deputy Director of Sichuan's Poverty Alleviation and Immigration Bureau, Mr Zhang Haipeng said the poverty rate in the province would be reduced to zero by 2020.

The park is a totally planned area of 160 square kilometres, with a total population of 65,500 and 6,466 still living in poverty.

The overall target of the park is to achieve a total investment of more than 5 billion yuan and to build a modern agricultural industry.

It has provided an annual output of 10 billion yuan and increased job opportunities for 30,000 farmer shelping them realise per capita net income of more than 20,000 yuan in the five years from 2014-2018.

Construction of the park beganin 2014, centring around the four major industries of fruits, flowers and trees, ecological breeding and rural tourism.

Up to now, the park has successfully introduced 42 modern agricultural projects.

With an accumulative investment of 2.2 billion yuan and a build-up area of 65 square kilometres, it has been approved as a provincial level modern agricultural demonstration park.

Following the pattern of promoting village-wise development driven by the park, the park sticks to measures that give preference to low-income families, employment, and industrial development.
