DPM calls for improving basic infrastructure for flood victims in Attapeu

Allocation of farm land and provision of rice seedlings to people displaced by floods must be hastened, Deputy Prime Minister Sonexay Siphandone has told authorities in Attapeu province.
Dr Sonexay, also Chairman of the National Ad Hoc Committee in-charge of dealing with natural disasters, issued the guidance during a visit to Attapeu on October 9.
He advised officials in-charge of recovery efforts to immediately improve the irrigation system to support agricultural production.
Dr Sonexay instructed authorities in-charge to continue to build and improve facilities in the temporary housing being built to accommodate thousands of people after they were left homeless by massive floods caused by the collapse of a dam in July.
He stressed the need to allocate farm land to people settling in new areas so they could make a living.
The officials were also told to distribute relief supplies and provide food and other essential goods and equipment to the displaced families until they are able to earn a living and become self-reliant.
Dr Sonexay said donations should be used in the most effective way and their use and distribution should be carried out in a transparent manner.
He called on the officials to make proper plans for the development of new communities and the construction of permanent homes for flood victims.
The Deputy Governor of Attapeu, Mr Ounlar Xayasith, told Dr Sonexay that the collection of information in 19 flood-hit villages was nearly complete and authorities had finished collecting detailed information about the losses and damage caused by the floods to people’s property, including houses, farm land and livestock.
