Ground broken for first Laos-Vietnam vocational school

Construction of the Laos-Vietnam Friendship Vocational School has begun, to enable more young people to learn job skills so that a larger workforce will be available to support Laos’ development and meet the needs of the regional labour market.
A ground-breaking ceremony to mark the start of construction of the new school took place in Nongbok district, Khammuan province, on Wednesday.
Speaking at the event, provincial Governor Mr Vanxay Phongsavanh said the model vocational school was the first of its kind in Khammuan to offer two parallel curricula in secondary education and vocational skills.

When the school opens, it will be an important vocational training centre for secondary school students, the unemployed, the disadvantaged, those looking for a job, and those who want to change careers, he said.
The new facility will be able to accommodate several hundred students and is expected to be complete by the end of this year.
Courses will be taught on electricity, repairs, engineering and agriculture.
The project received a grant and a gift from the President of Vietnam Nguyen Xuan Phuc when he visited Laos in 2021, providing a US$5 million grant for the construction of the Laos-Vietnam Friendship Vocational School.
The Embassy of Vietnam to Laos said the project indicated the value of the comprehensive cooperation between the two parties, states and peoples of Vietnam and Laos. The project also demonstrates the commitment of both countries to the mission of the development of education, infrastructure and human resources.
The school will open at the end of 2022 to celebrate two historic occasions - the 60th anniversary of the two countries’ diplomatic ties and the 45th year since the signing of the Vietnam-Laos Treaty of Amity and Cooperation.
The school will have four main buildings, a management office building, two student dormitories, laboratory, four practical training buildings, essential educational materials, and other facilities.
Trainees will learn the practical skills needed to work in local businesses in Khammuan.
The school will provide practical lessons in addition to theoretical knowledge so that graduates have the appropriate knowledge skills and can get jobs at small or medium sized enterprises or industrial plants.
The project is a further indication of the great friendship, special solidarity and comprehensive cooperation between Laos and Vietnam, which has consistently deepened in the fields of politics, foreign affairs, defence, security, economics, trade, investment, education, health and other areas.
