Russia gives boost to school meals programme

The government of the Russian Federation is contributing US$2 million to the World Food Programme (WFP) to help finance the countrywide school meals initiative, according to the Russian Embassy to Laos.
The funding injection will help to sustain the project so that meals can continue to be provided to rural schoolchildren, with the aim of encouraging school attendance.
Russia’s contribution provides further support to the school meals programme, which has been ongoing in Laos since the early 2000s through the WFP and currently involves 140,000 children at 915 secondary schools in eight provinces.
The participation of Russia in this project will contribute to the further development of secondary education in Laos, improvement of the health of the younger generation of Lao citizens and, correspondingly, the realisation of Laos’ goals to graduate from the list of Least Developed Countries and fulfil the Sustainable Development Goals.
In addition, on December 19, 2021, the government of the Russian Federation approved a feasibility study for the comprehensive modernisation of Mittaphab Hospital in Vientiane, prepared by the country office of the United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS).
The upcoming comprehensive modernisation of the Russian-Lao Friendship Hospital, financed by the Russian government, which has allocated about US$12 million to the project, aims to improve Laos’ healthcare system, strengthen the country’s capacity to respond to coronavirus infection, and enable Laos to graduate from the UN’s Least Developed Countries list in 2026, as well as to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals.
