- President pushes for stronger agribusiness in Vientiane province
Party Secretary General and State President Thongloun Sisoulith on Tuesday visited agricultural and other businesses in Vientiane province to promote crop growing and livestock production as important pillars of sustainable socio-economic development. During their tour of the province, the President and his delegation visited the Phetchaleunsap Cattle Farm, which was established in 2019 in Thoulakhom district. The owners have invested 21 billion kip in the farm, which currently has 288 cattle, and plan to increase investment to 205 billion kip.
There are also plans to expand the existing 12-hectare site to 120 hectares and increase the size of the herd to 2,700. ..More >>>
- Kip depreciation deals heavy blow to Lao economy
The Lao kip has plunged to a record low in recent days against the US dollar and Thai baht despite the government’s attempts to stabilise currency exchange rates. The value of the national currency has nosedived since the end of March, the Governor of the Bank of the Lao PDR, Mr Sonexay Sitphaxay, told National Assembly members this week.
Over the past five months, the kip dropped in value by 7.79 percent against the US dollar and 8.43 percent against the Thai baht compared to the figures recorded at the end of last year, due to a supply-demand mismatch. ...More >>>
- Cryptocurrency trade adds millions of dollars to state budget
Several million dollars have been generated from the trade in cryptocurrency after the government authorised 13 companies to operate a digital currency business, the government told the National Assembly (NA).
Eleven of the 13 companies have carried out transactions in digital currency. Ten of the companies have handed over US$4.5 million (more than 66 billion kip) and 5.71 billion kip to the government in copyright fees in return for permission to operate the business.
