Laos, Vietnam pledge to strengthen cooperation
Laos and Vietnam have affirmed their shared intention to continue to work closely to strengthen cooperation mechanisms between their two Ministries of Foreign Affairs.
Lao Minister of Foreign Affairs Mr Saleumxay Kommasith led a delegation on a visit to his Vietnamese counterpart, Bui Thanh Son, and co-chaired the 8th Vietnam-Laos political consultation meeting held in Hanoi from December 27-29.

The two ministers agreed to continue to closely coordinate in arranging celebrations to mark the Year of Solidarity and Friendship between Vietnam and Laos in 2022.
They discussed cooperation in combatting and preventing the spread of Covid-19 by continuing to support the implementation of Asean initiatives to deal with Covid-19, including economic recovery.
On behalf of the Lao government, Mr Saleumxay thanked the Vietnamese government for its assistance to Laos through the provision of medical staff and supplies.
He also informed the Vietnamese minister of the plan to reopen Laos to tourism, with limited travel to be allowed in so-called green zones starting in January.
The two ministers also discussed emerging regional and international issues of common concern, as well as ways to further enhance cooperation and mutual understanding within bilateral and multilateral frameworks and bodies such as the United Nations, Asean, Cambodia-Laos-Vietnam (CLV), Cambodia-Laos-Myanmar-Vietnam (CLMV), and the Ayeyawady-Chao Phraya-Mekong Economic Cooperation Strategy.
In addition, they reviewed the cooperation between the two Ministries of Foreign Affairs over the past year.
The departments of international law and treaties under the two countries’ foreign ministries reviewed existing agreements and facilitated the completion of internal procedures for several signed treaties, as well as pushing ahead with the signing of new treaties, to further consolidate relations between Laos and Vietnam.
The two ministers said they highly valued the great friendship, special solidarity and comprehensive cooperation between Laos and Vietnam, which has consistently deepened in the fields of politics, foreign affairs, defence, security, economics, trade, investment, education, health and other areas.
A report in the Vietnam News stated that security and defence cooperation is increasing, contributing to the maintenance of security and stability in the two countries.

Economic cooperation between Vietnam and Laos continued on a positive trajectory, with the value of two-way trade in the first 11 months of 2021 amounting to over US$1.2 billion, up 33.6 percent compared to the same period last year.
