Retro restaurant’s menu revival shakes up Vientiane’s dining scene

Retro Restaurant and Bar has created an inspiring new menu after generating a lot of interest and getting a good response from local and foreign customers over the years.

The new menu includes salmon with sauce, fried chicken with lime sauce, fried shrimp and fried pork with sauce.
Retro’s management believes it is different from other restaurants because of its high quality, delicious food that is cleanly prepared, while the menu features international and traditional Lao favourites at reasonable prices. This ensures Retro can cater to Lao and foreign patrons.
The restaurant has been a top favourite among the city’s young people and foreigners since opening its doors in 2017.
The restaurant is located in the central business district of Vientiane and serves up coffee and food in a modern setting with an “English atmosphere” that is pleasing to the eye.
The restaurant is owned by local businessman, Mr Khammy Douangsavanh, 32, also known as Mr Bui.
Mr Khammy told Vientiane Times that the price of the dishes served ranges from 10,000 kip to more than 100,000 kip.
“We provide an environment where people can feel relaxed and happy while enjoying food in a modern setting and a comfortable atmosphere. The restaurant attracts all types of people, including government workers, private sector employees and other residents of Vientiane,” he said.
The eatery usually attracts about 100 patrons for dinner, including the younger set and students.
One customer, Chanthaneth Phommachack, said he liked to go to Retro for parties and dinner with his friends because of its atmosphere, menu and the folk music performed by local singers.
Mr Khammy said his restaurant has generated a lot of interest since it opened and attracted customers from all sections of society. Diners have expressed satisfaction with the menu and the service provided by the staff.
The most popular dishes are German style pork hock, salmon with sauce, Lao sausages, and fried rice salad served in a coconut shell. The drinks menu includes coffee, tea and a range of popular beverages.
The restaurant has two floors and three zones, allowing it to cater to up to 200 customers a day. It’s easy to find and access as it’s located in Oubmoung village, Sikhottabong district.
